Prepare yourself, Student Art is coming!

3D Environment 'Cliffside Ruins'

Two lonely souls search for answers to life's big questions (like how to efficiently unwrap UV's)

A recent project saw myself and 6 other over-ambitious fools.. *ahem* aspiring game artists, set out on an epic quest to bring a cliffside fantasy environment alive within Unity.

Seeing as I'm a pretty rocking guy I took charge of crafting the cliff and boulder elements that would add an earthly layer to our scene and keep it grounded.

(Disclaimer: I can't promise you these puns will plateau, proceed down this slippery slope at your own risk)

Concept Art

After the group had agreed on a concrete direction for our scene, I went to work chipping away at some conceptual art of a cliffside environment, with a strong focus on the baseline terrain and stylized rock formations.

Concepting can be dirty work, but I took care not to lose my marbles.

And so began the rocky road toward modelling a workable sculpt. After a few failed attempts and just when I thought I'd hit rock bottom, I opted for a high-to-low poly workflow. Beginning with a Zbrush sculpt (I totally dig Zbrush!), this acted as a stepping stone to creating a secondary 'boulder' asset which I could use as a filler in the scene. Two birds with one stone!

With the deadline approaching faster than a landslide, it was time to construct our scene within unity.

Don't be a crater, be an appreciator!
